April 10: Big Island Chocolate Festival

This year's event, themed "Cirque de Chocolate," promises a whimsical experience blending circus magic with the richness of chocolate. At this year’s Big Island Chocolate Festival, attendees can indulge in chocolate-themed culinary demonstrations, cacao farm tours, and seminars on cacao growing and processing. The festival culminates in a spectacular gala featuring unlimited tastings from over 15 chef stations, live music, and a silent auction.

April 20 - 26: Merrie Monarch Festival

The Merrie Monarch Festival is a week-long celebration of Hawaiian culture held annually in Hilo. Established in 1963, the festival honors King David Kalākaua, known as the "Merrie Monarch," who was instrumental in revitalizing Hawaiian traditions during his reign. The event features a prestigious hula competition, attracting top hula schools from Hawaii and beyond, as well as cultural demonstrations, art exhibitions, and a grand parade.

May 1: Lei Day

Lei Day, celebrated annually on May 1st in Hawaii, is a vibrant celebration that honors the tradition of making and wearing leis, which symbolize aloha, love, and connection to the land and its people. This festive day is filled with cultural events, music, hula dancing, and of course beautiful lei-making. Learn to make a flower lei following traditional practices!

May 29: Hawaii Songwriting Festival

Music is something that unites us all. Weather you are a casual listener, amateur writer, or professional musician, all are invited to attend the three-day Hawaii Songwriting Festival that kicks off on May 29. Scheduled events include songwriting workshops, mentoring sessions, educational seminars, and Q & A panels. Of course, impromptu acoustic jam sessions are bound to pop up.

June 11: Kamehameha Day Celebration

Kamehameha the Great was born in North Kohala on the Island of Hawaii in 1758. Every June 11th, the town honors the king’s legacy with a day of celebration and cultural events. Witness a procession of royal societies make their way to a famous Kamehameha statue that is carefully and ceremonially draped in long ti leaf and flower leis.

July 4: Hilo Bay Blast

Sport your most colorful red, white, and blue swimsuit and celebrate the 4th of July in style and comfort from a sandy beach on the Island of Hawaii. Cool off with a shave ice in the shade and cap the night off with a fireworks display over the Pacific Ocean. Numerous resorts on the island tend to host firework shows, including Mauna Lani Resort. Alternatively, the Hilo Bay Blast event featuring live music from the Hawaii County Band coordinated with colorful fireworks has been a popular option in year’s past.
